Job Summary
The Department of Political Science at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure track position in Political Science at the assistant professor level beginning August 2023.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Political Science with a background centered on global political and economic issues (social justice).  The Department of Political Science seeks candidates whose research bridges theory and practice, so as to promote and support student engagement in fields associated with awareness and understanding of global, political, and economic issues. Additionally, the candidate should possess the ability to assist in the teaching of research methods (quantitative and qualitative). The department seeks candidates whose areas of concentration are international affairs and political economy (global and domestic).

The successful applicant will have the ability and willingness to work collegially and teach a 4-4 teaching load. Ideal candidates should also have the ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes, demonstrate enthusiasm in recruiting and mentoring and a willingness to contribute to the growth and recruitment of the undergraduate Political Science programs. The department is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups.

About the Department
The Department of Political Science offers all levels of instruction for undergraduates and offers minors, majors, and concentrations. The Department also offers an accelerated Political Science/Pre-Law program. The Political Science program is designed for students who aspire to active leadership roles in promoting a more just and humane global society. Completing the political science major will: 1) increase competence in the understanding of the principles of government and political thought; 2) develop awareness and understanding of global political and economic issues; 3) enhance skills in statistical research and quantitative analysis; 4) maximize abilities to read critically, speak effectively, write clearly and think analytically; and, 5) facilitate abilities to apply moral and ethical analysis to political issues.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D in Political Science from a regionally accredited institution and evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level.
Strong commitment to teaching twelve semester hours per semester.
Commitment to developing an active research program within the area of the applicant’s expertise.
Commitment to academic advising for majors within the department; and
Demonstrate commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications
Advanced training beyond the Ph.D., e.g. Post-doc, industry, etc.
Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level.
Background centered on global and political economy (global and domestic), and research methods (quantitative and qualitative).
Established track record of meaningful mentorship of undergraduate students.
Successful experience teaching to a diverse student body and knowledge of effective strategies (e.g. culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students) supporting underrepresented groups.
Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area.
A research project that complements existing department research.
