Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time, one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science to begin September 1, 2021. The successful applicant will teach courses that also contribute to the College’s interdisciplinary program in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.

Major/Essential Functions: The annual teaching assignment will be 6 courses, one of which may be a one-month January Term intensive course determined by the candidate and appropriate to the candidate’s expertise. Primary teaching responsibilities will include multiple sections of Political and Legal Thinking (POL 160), and courses that contribute to both the POL and GWS programs (i.e., Sex, Power, and Politics (POL 285) and Feminist Political Thought (POL 380)).

The Department of Political Science helps students develop an understanding of political processes and institutions and to acquaint them with the issues and problems that politics tries to manage. The Department also teaches students skills of analysis, research, and evaluation so that they can become more informed citizens.

The Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies interdisciplinary program examines gender and sexuality as cultural and social categories that organize and shape human experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
• PhD in Political Science (or a related field); we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by September 1, 2021
• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching
• Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student advising
• Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Expertise in African American politics and/or Black political thought
