Faculty Position in Public Administration and International Affairs and
Director of Master of Arts in International Relations Program

The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University seeks to hire a senior faculty member to provide academic and programmatic leadership of its professional Master of Arts in International Relations (MAIR) program. We are seeking to hire either a candidate with sufficient academic qualifications to be hired at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure, or a candidate with substantial leadership experience in a professional field involving extensive international affairs work, who could be appointed as a professor of practice. The person hired will be a faculty member in the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs at the Maxwell School beginning in August, 2020.

The Maxwell School’s MAIR program is highly regarded internationally, ranking among the top professional international affairs programs in the world, and it is a member of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA). The MAIR program is administered by the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs, which consists of a highly diverse and interdisciplinary faculty, and is also home to a top ranked Master of Public Administration. The MAIR program is strongly interdisciplinary, and draws on courses offered across the Maxwell School, which includes departments of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science and Sociology. The program also offers exceptional global programming that allows students to complete internships and coursework at locations around the world; it utilizes facilities at the leading global think-tank CSIS located in Washington DC to provide students an option of completing part of their program in the nation’s capital; and it provides options for innovative dual degree programs with, among others, the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Germany, the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University, and the College of Law.

The successful candidate will bring innovation and leadership to the tasks of setting goals and priorities for the MAIR program, identifying resource needs, and developing and overseeing the implementation of new programming and recruiting strategies. The candidate will have the support of, and work closely with the Dean of the Maxwell School, the Chair of Public Administration and International Affairs, and faculty and professional staff. The person hired will also be expected to teach courses in the MAIR program and maintain either an active research agenda or other forms of engagement in the professional international affairs community.

The position is open to candidates from a wide-range of social science disciplines and candidates with appropriate academic qualifications can be considered for a courtesy or joint appointment with one of the other social science departments in the Maxwell School. We encourage applications from candidates with expertise in any one of a broad range of areas covered in the MAIR program. These areas include, but are not limited to adaption to climate change, conflict studies, diplomacy, environmental sustainability, global governance, humanitarian assistance, human rights, international development, international finance, international political economy, international security, international trade, management and leadership of international organizations, NGO management and leadership, peace studies, and regional studies focused on Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, or South Asia. Competitive candidates will have familiarity with professional trends, opportunities and career paths in the field of professional international affairs work. Familiarity with programs and trends in professional international affairs education and a demonstrated commitment to training the next generation of leaders in international affairs is required. Strong candidates will have either distinguished academic achievements including a record of high quality research and teaching, or a distinguished professional career involving leadership positions with substantial responsibilities. Regardless of whether a candidate’s primary qualifications are academic or professional, he or she should have a record of engagement with international affairs scholars, policy makers, and practitioners. A Ph.D. is preferred, but not required for candidates whose qualifications are primarily professional and who would be hired as a professor of practice. Members of groups that are underrepresented in higher education leadership positions are strongly encouraged to apply. Salary is commensurate with experience and professional accomplishments.
