In response to Chancellor Donde Plowman’s announcement of The University of Tennessee (Knoxville campus) seeking the advancement of current interdisciplinary program (IDP) of Africana Studies into a future Department of Africana Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences at the University invites applications for two, open-rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) tenure-track positions from individuals whose research agendas encompass a broad spectrum of scholarship and creative activity related to the continent and/or peoples of Africa, the African Diaspora, and/or the African-American experience.
Individuals appointed to these positions will begin their tenure home in one of the College’s 21 academic Departments or Schools (https://artsci.utk.edu/departments-programs/by-divisions/). The candidates are expected to make substantive contributions to the mission of the College’s interdisciplinary program in Africana Studies (http://artsci.utk.edu/departments-programs/interdisciplinary-undergraduate-programs/), including teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Africana Studies.
Although the process to convert the Africana Studies IDP into a fully-fledged, tenure-granting Department in the College of Art & Sciences is just starting, we have every expectation and the full support of the Central Administration that this will be the ultimate outcome.
The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. Applicants must demonstrate promise of distinguished scholarship or creative activity, and a commitment to excellent teaching. Appropriate terminal degree is required at the time of appointment. Appointment will be made at a rank commensurate with an individual’s level of experience, with an expected start date of Fall Semester 2021.
We encourage applications for these positions from qualified individuals pursuing research agendas aligned with our Africana Studies academic unit, especially in the following disciplines and concentrations:
Humanities (English and Literature [emphasis on 20th and 21st centuries], Philosophy, Religious Studies, or Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures);
Social Sciences (Psychology, Anthropology, or Geography); and
The Arts (Ethnomusicology or Historical Musicology).
