Prestage Mentorship Award

Independent Foundation Award



The Jewel and James Prestage Mentorship Award is an annual award  recognizing outstanding political science/public administration professors who demonstrate the same spirit of mentoring and commitment to students as Dr. Jewel Limar Prestage, a founding member of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists(NCOBPS) and the first African American woman to earn a PhD in Political Science, and her equally accomplished, husband, Dr James Prestage, a Biologist and past President at Southern University. The award honors the lifetime accomplishments of this extraordinary couple while supporting the development of talented professionals who mentor students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU’s). The award includes a specially designed plaque and financial assistance consisting of transportation, conference fees, and housing costs( worth up to $1000) to attend NCOPBS' annual conference.

Eligible nominees must have been employed for at least two prior years and be currently at a HBCU holding the rank of Assistant Professor or above. Nominees must also have a history of supporting the professional and educational development of their students beyond the classroom. The successful nominee must also be willing to participate in an award ceremony at NCOBPS’ national meeting.

Nominations can come from persons familiar with the work of the nominee or a person may self- nominate.

The nomination package must include: a completed nomination form, a statement of no more than 1000 words detailing how the nominee exhibits the mentoring qualities and values of the Prestages, at least two letters of support from current/past students or peers that detail the teaching, advising, and mentoring qualifications of the nominee, and a current Curriculum Vitae.
