NCOBPS Member receives the Erika Fairchild Award from the Women's Caucus for Political Science - South (WCPS-South)

As president of the Women's Caucus-South, it is with great pleasure that I disclose the 2009 recipient of the Erika Fairchild Award. The Erika Fairchild Award is presented bi-annually to an exemplary scholar and first-rate mentor. This year's recipient is Sharon Wright Austin from the University of Florida.  Her most recent book, The Transformation of Plantation Politics in the Mississippi Delta: Black Politics, Concentrated Poverty, and Social Capital in the Mississippi Delta, was published by the State University of New York Press in 2006. She has authored several scholarly articles and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals and academic presses. Professor Austin has also served as a mentor to several scholars whose research focuses on race and gender politics - for example, Angela Lewis, Maruice Mangum, and Charles Menifield. Both the breadth and depth of their letters spoke to her strong record of scholarship, exceptional performance as a teacher, and genuine commitment to service. Congratulations to Sharon! It is indeed an honor that is well-deserved. She will be honored at the 2009 annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association to be held at the Intercontinental Hotel in New Orleans on Thurs, Jan 8, 2009. Her reception will held at 7:00 pm.
